AED Program (Automated External Defibrillator Program)

St. Mary's Foundation is teaming up with Philips to start a Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) Program in central South Dakota. The Foundation is working to increase survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest by increasing the availability of automated external defibrillator (AED) devices and empowering people to use them through AED/CPR training and education. Saving lives is the focus of this project. We believe central South Dakota will become a role model for the rest of the state on how to bring communities together to be trained and equipped to use these life-saving devices.

The Foundation will be working on locating the AEDs in Potter, Sully, Hughes, Stanley, Hyde, Lyman, and Jones Counties. A database will then be developed to notify the AED registered facility when the batteries and pads have expired and need to be replaced. A list of AED locations along with maps will be made available to the public to increase the awareness of where AEDs are located and also to determine locations where AEDs need to be placed in the community.

Nonprofit organizations can apply for grants through the Foundation to help pay for the cost of the AED. Businesses can also order AEDs through the Foundation at a price that has been negotiated with the supplier. For more information on the St. Mary's Foundation PAD Program or to make a donation to help place AEDs in the community. Call Julie Moore at 224-3451 or email juliemoore@catholichealth.net

AED Locations in Central South Dakota

While police, fire and EMS handle cardiac arrest calls quite effectively, defibrillators are beginning to be more and more commonplace. We would implore anyone to call 9-1-1 before attempting to acquire a defibrillator using the data on the following map. While we make a reasonable effort to make sure this information is correct, we can make no guarantees. Some of these facilities are not open 24/7. Always call 9-1-1 first! Nonetheless certain at-risk people and/or families might want to know of AED locations near them.

AED Q&A

  1. Why is my device chirping or beeping?
There are a number of reasons your device may be chirping or beeping. Hopefully these troubleshooting notes will help you determine if your device is functioning properly.

    FRx Routine Troubleshooting

  2. Do I need to perform maintenance on my defibrillator?
The HeartStart defibrillator’s Owner’s Manual suggests performing a monthly visual inspection of the defibrillator, supplies, accessories and spares to ensure that there is no obvious physical damage and that those components with an expiration date (e.g. pads, batteries) have not expired.

The HeartStart Defibrillators employ daily, weekly and monthly self tests to help ensure the devices are ready for use during an emergency. A failure of any of these tests will be shown by the status indicator.

    FRx Support Maintaining

  3. Can I use my defibrillator on a wet or metal surface?
It is safe to defibrillate a patient on either a wet or metal surface as long as the appropriate safety precautions are taken. Specifically, care should be taken to ensure that no one is touching the patient when the shock button is pressed.

    Wet/Metal Technical Note

  4. When should I use a defibrillator?
The HeartStart Defibrillator is designed to treat someone you suspect may be a victim of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

    A person is SCA:

    • Does not respond when shaken, and

    • Does not breathe normally.

If in doubt, apply the pads. Follow the instructions for each step in using the defibrillator.

  5. What rhythms are considered shockable by the AED?
The HeartStart Defibrillator is designed to shock ventricular fibrillation (VF) and certain ventricular tachycardias associated with a lack of circulation, including ventricular flutter and polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT). HeartStart defibrillators use multiple parameters to determine if a rhythm is shockable.

Note: For safety reasons, some very low amplitude or low frequency rhythms may not be interpreted as shockable VF rhythms. Also some VT rhythms may not be interpreted as shockable rhythms.

    Technical Note

  6. What does it mean if the AED says "analysis interrupted" during use?
The AED has detected artifact from movement or patient handling that is interfering with the AED’s ability to analyze patient’s ECG.

Battery Q&A

  1. How do I install my battery?
Battery installation instructions are included in your defibrillator’s Owner’s Manuals. Please click here for further information on battery installation instructions:

    FRx Installing Battery

  2. When does my battery expire?
If you install your battery by the “Install by date” your battery will last 4 years in standby mode . If battery is installed after this date, the life will be less than 4 years.

  3. How do I know when my battery needs to be replaced?
The HeartStart FRx and HS1 series (Heartstart Defibrillator; Home and OnSite) Defibrillators use long-life Lithium batteries. When a low battery is detected, the unit will start chirping and the status indicator will change from the ready to use state.

The “i button” on the front of the HS1 or FRx devise will provide you with the status of your battery. Note these defibrillators use chirps and a Flashing “i button” to alert you to problems.

    Battery Usage Technical Note

  4. What causes a battery to drain?
Each of the batteries are designed to have a 4-year life in standby mode. This time is reduced when the device/battery is in use or delivering shocks. As an example, in the case of the FRx series, the battery is specified to provide $ hours of operating time or 200 shocks or a minimum of 4 years in standby.

Standby mode means that the battery is installed but in not used, only self tests are being performed. The standby life will be reduced if your devise is used on a patient or if it is used for training purposes.

  5. How do I purchase a new battery?
The price of Long Life LiMn02 battery is $135.00. Contact the Foundation at 224.3451 or email juliemoore@catholichealth.com.

Defibrillation Pads or Pads Cartridge Q&A

  1. How do I change/install my pads cartridge or defibrillation pads?
Pads installation instructions are included in your defibrillator’s Owner’s Manual.

    FRx Pads (video)

  2. When do my pads expire?
The “use before date” is an expiration date. Defibrillation pads must be replaced after this date. We recommend that you allow yourself enough time to replace these pads to ensure that pads are replaced before the “use before” date or expiration date.

  3. How do I purchase new defibrillation pads?
The price of defibrillation pads is $45.00. Contact the Foundation at 224.3451 or email juliemoore@catholichealth.com.
